Apprentices, School Leavers and Graduates: Finding the Balance and Managing the Mix (April 2019)

The Graduate Fog Employers Club’s spring panel event was kindly hosted by Channel 4 at their headquarters in Westminster. Our panel included Charlotte Carter, Head of Student Recruitment at KPMG, Amanda Timberg, Head of Talent & Outreach Programs – EMEA at Google, and John Hynard, Group Talent Manager at Royal Mail.

Charlotte, Amanda and John shared insights around the event’s main topic: How to find the balance and manage the mix of apprentices, school leavers and graduates entering your organisation. We are grateful to them for their openness to share their challenges, as well as their triumphs! We also heard extensive discussion around the consequences (both intended and unintended) of the apprenticeship levy, and how social and ethnic diversity fits into this complex picture.

Finally, it was time to open up the discussion to our audience, with contributions from Laura Boswell from Channel 4, Iain Gallagher from Santander, Kate Wright from AstraZeneca, Clare Tomkins from EY, Aneta Procajlo from the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme, Paige Guilfoyle from Cancer Research UK and Kate Bruges from J. Walter Thompson. We also benefited from insights from Patrick Philpott from Vision Path, and Anna Williams from the Sutton Trust.

The event was kindly sponsored by our friends at Give A Grad A Go.
